Elijah Marsh was a 3-years old boy when he died in a Toronto frigid night after he wandered out of his grandmother's apartment building. As he wandered into a side corner in the middle of February 19 night, he froze to death. Elijah was wearing a diaper, shirt and boots, but nothing else. His tragic death touched the hearts of Canadians across the country who in less than 2 weeks raised funds of over $179,000 to support his family. Although there is no measure to the loss of a child for the mother and the family, over five hundreds, mostly people who did not know him nor his family, gathered in his funeral on the morning of Saturday February 28 at St. Matthews United Church to show their affection and hear about his love and courage by his mother.
It is astonishing that the life of a little boy means a lot to ordinary people, not necessarily religious. It is profoundly important that we learn the importance of the dignity and value of every human person instead of boasting about certain religious cultures that often tear the social coexistence and destroy lives because of greed or fundamentalism. "Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven" said Christ (Matthew 19: 14).
